We got going fairly early, but there was a lot of packing to do. We left Linga Longa and Graskop with very heavy hearts as we had had a great time in this beautiful part of the world. We eased the sadness of leaving ever so slightly by picking up a small cache hidden at a restaurant we had eaten at many years ago. It has a whole bunch of very witty variations of road-signs in the parking lot.
We were determined to go an pick up a cache near Montrose Falls and we were very glad that we did as these falls are really quite stunning. There had been a lot of rain overnight and so the falls were particularly spectacular. There are really three stages to the falls: An initial stage which thunders down into a kind of a bucket and then the water rushes down some stone gulleys over the next set of falls. We had a great time exploring (and finding the cache) and took some amazing photos.
Then we headed up the Schoemanskloof valley and stopped at "Old Joe's" to examine the latest paint job. "Old Joe" is a rock that the road engineers set up as a bit of a tribute to the engineer in charge of the pass and over the last couple of years, a local artist with the nom de plume of "G.Host" has been painting this rock with various disguises. You can see some lovely examples here. In our photos you can see the latest paint job which we think is stunning!
After "Old Joe's" we stopped at Milly's for a trout roll (and a quick cache) before heading heading to the Wimpy at Belfast where we stopped for brunch. Then it was off home and the end of part 1 of the holiday adventure.
